Discussion:
[jitsi-users] Which account is calling?

Hello,

I have created multiple accounts in jitsi, each of which is associated
with a different phone number. That way, when someone calls I can tell
which number they called. Now I just need to know how to make jitsi
display which account/extension is ringing.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Did you test the nightly builds? This feature was added there.

Thank you. That helps much, in the sense that I can now tell which
line/account is ringing (although I've only tested one line so far - but
I'm hopeful that it will work for all lines).

However, it created a multitude of other issues.

Am I wrong in thinking I should be able to edit "Display Name" and have
it "stick" ? It did not. Everytime I changed it, it reverted to the
old display name which was xxxx-qDqigq+***@public.gmane.org . So, I tried creating
a new account (call it "16") - and in that case the display name stuck,
and was editable; problem successfully worked around.

Since creating a new account allowed me to edit Display Name, I decided
to recreate the first account (call it "1"). As that required deleting
the original account in order to recreate it, that's what I did. In
doing so, I lost my somewhat lengthy contact list.

Also upon recreating the first account, the second account disappeared
and I got an error message which unfortunately I neglected to make a
note of. Essentially it was something about the wrong password, and it
referenced account 16 - the one that disappeared, but it referenced it
in the context of account 1. Confusing, I know - and unfortunately I
can't be more specific than that.

So, I fixed up the password for the recreated account 1 and it logged in
successfully. Since account 16 was now missing, I tried to create it
again but got "This user already exists on the selected network. Please
choose another user or network." So, now I have no way of actually
accessing account 16 as it doesn't show up, yet I can't recreate it
because I get that error message.

Next, am I wrong in thinking that the Display Name is what comes up when
the phone rings? It does not (the account URI is what comes up). If
this is correct behavior, then when/where is Display Name used?

Finally, I thought that Display Name stuck - but upon double-checking I
now notice it's blank; so it is inconsistent in its behavior.

So, to summarize the above issues:
1) Unable to edit Display Name created in older build. Since I've
already deleted this account, the issue is moot from my point of view.
2) My contact list is gone. Is there a way to recover it? I used the
plain "Address book" format for "Contact Sources".
3) I have a "hidden" account I'm unable to use, delete, recreate or
otherwise access. How can I fix this?
4) The Display Name is not used on incoming calls - or anywhere that I
can see. What is it's purpose if not for this?
5) Display Name doesn't act consistently in the account field.

Thank you in advance.

Some additional info:

This is the missing error message that I didn't make a note of (the
first time):
Authentication failed for ***@host.domain.com (SIP). The password you
entered is not valid. (In red).

Then, there is a box for "Identifier" and it's pre-filled with 16 <<<<
Note carefully. This is a mismatch as it's reporting account 1 in the
error message, but account 16 as the one with the wrong password.

The enclosing dialog box references account 1 in the header.

I now get this error message and situation whenever I try to modify
account 1. Worse, I'm unable to login now - using either password.

So, somehow the two accounts have become co-mingled.

Less important but worth mentioning is that there is a voicemail waiting
on account 16, but clicking the call button sends me to the vm for
account 1 (or at least it did, until I tried modifying account 1 and now
can't login at all.)

Update:

If I clear the checkbox next to the account name, and then tick it again
it tries to log me in and then gives me the error dialog message box as
above. Changing it from the prefilled 16 to 1 as the identifier and
using the password for account 1 allows me to login again. However, if
I attempt to modify the account (1) again, I get the error dialog box
again - and I go around in circles like this.

Potentially final update:

I deleted the "1" account and that seems to have cleared the co-mingling
issue. I'm able to recreate both accounts. Display Names appear to be
sticking, although I haven't tried changing them after the first edit (I
don't remember for sure, but I think I went into the "advanced" tab when
I originally setup the account the first time - this time, I did not go
into the advanced tab but edited the Display Name after
creating/saving/signing into the account).

Recreating the two accounts enabled me to get into the 16 account voicemail.

Problems remaining:
1) My contact list is still missing. I have a backup of
~/.jitsi/contactlist.xml - is it as simple as copying that file over, or
is there something else need be done?
1a) Other than backing up this file on a regular basis, is there a safer
way to avoid it being deleted in the future in the event I need to
recreate the account? (I use a free DNS service. Although I've had the
same domain name for a year, 2 days ago I was forced to change it. That
forced me to delete and make a new jitsi account, as editing of the sip
id/username is not possible (it's greyed out/protected). I use asterisk
so I am my own registrar).

2) Display Name doesn't seem to be used anywhere - except that the Voice
Messages menu appears to retain the Display Name from a previous
incarnation of the account.

Thank you in advance.
