[jitsi-users] JitMeet max participants

Hi

I just saw Emil Ivov's talk on JitMeet at FOSDEM (recording) and
immediately got really excited about it (WebRTC with the Jitsi
videobridge). I work for the Open Knowledge Foundation at we rely quite
heavily on online communications being a global organisation (and we'd
quite like them to be free (as in freedom) and open source).

However our video conferencing meetings can be quite big so I'm
wondering if you've done any stress tests to figure out the maximum
amount of participants in a single call.

technical limit within Jitmeet?

participants are presented on the screen.

So this is probably a hardware question. So the question is how much
hardware power would I need to run a webrtc videobridge for 50
participants (if that is known)?

Hi Tryggvi,

I agree, there probably is not a technical limit, I just couldn't tell from
your letter.

Unfortunately, I don't have knowledge on what the hardware max limit is and
I haven't seen it written anywhere. Try it out little by little and see
where you machine starts to hang. :)

Hey Tryggvi,

Apologies for the delayed response.

It's great to hear about your interest in JitMeet. Would be great to get you all set up. Feel free to contact me privately if you need help with the installation.

So there are several aspects to the "max users" question:

1. How many can the bridge support on a given hardware config
2. How many can JitMeet handle

Currently the answer to 1 is very floating as it is something we are actively looking into. Our goal is to be able to support up to 100 people per server before the summer.

JitMeet is in a slightly similar situation: currently it would just show people as they enter the room and that starts becoming too much around 10 or 12. I haven't ben able to show beyond 18 on my own machine (and the quality was not good). This too is something we will be addressing in the following months but we need to get some work done first (add SCTP support, active speaker detection and tracking, etc.).

We are getting there :)
